The archives
THE DIG reads public-domain material made available by these institutions. Every find links back to the original.
Library of Congress · Chronicling America
Historic American newspapers, 1770–1963, digitized by the National Digital Newspaper Program (a partnership of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress) and state partners. Page images and OCR are served by the Library of Congress (loc.gov API, tile.loc.gov image and text services). The Library of Congress is not aware of any copyright restrictions on Chronicling America's newspapers; cite as "Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers. Library of Congress." Status: loc.gov is asking automated readers to pass a browser challenge right now; search paused, page images and OCR still load.
Biodiversity Heritage Library
Natural-history books and journals, read from BHL's open data and its Internet Archive mirror. Status: search needs a free BHL API key (BHL_API_KEY); BHL scans are read through the Internet Archive mirror meanwhile.
Internet Archive
Public-domain books, journals and reports (published before 1930), with OCR and page images from archive.org. Status: Available.
Wikipedia
